Remote BCBA supervision hours (also known as Virtual BCBA supervision) for the purpose for attaining supervision hours is available for anyone residing within the United States or Canada; this is due to upcoming restrictions being placed on international behavior analytic candidates by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB).

Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis should an international application be close to completing the requirements necessary to sit for the exam. The hourly rate for distance supervision is based on the type of experience desired (supervised fieldwork or concentrated supervised fieldwork) and the number of weekly meetings needed to maintain the correction number of contacts. Group supervision may also be considered as an option on a case-by-case basis.

The BCBA Supervision Checklist is a great resource and provides a snapshot of each component necessary to meet the requirements of supervision. The use of a well-rounded BCBA Supervision Curriculum enhances the array of activities available to ensure that each item on the task list is mastered in a timely manner.

BCBA Supervision Hours (also known as independent fieldwork) is the accrual of experience under the direct guidance of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). For those currently employed in the behavior analytic field, fieldwork contracts can often be obtained with your employer. However, those not currently working in the field may need to explore other options for locating a supervisor and accruing fieldwork.

The supervisor-supervisee relationship requires a number of things including, but not limited to, a signed contract detailing the responsibilities of each party, a pre-established understanding of what will be provided or obtained during the course of supervision (ex. supervision of direct work or completion of indirect activities).

Affordable BCBA Supervision

Affordable BCBA supervision hours are sometimes hard to find, especially for those who live in more rural areas. Some candidates are fortunate enough to obtain free BCBA supervision through their employer (often in exchange for continuing to work there as an RBT or agreeing to stay on as a BCBA after passing the exam).
Virtual BCBA supervision (also known as BCBA distance supervision) is an excellent option for those with limited access to qualified supervisors or limited funding for supervision.
Group supervision at a lower rate per person may be explored provided each member of the group has similar experience and/or learning styles.

Questions People Commonly Ask About "Affordable BCBA Supervision"

  • Currently rates for BCBA Supervision Hours across the United States range from $45-$250 per hour. Rates vary depending on the supervising BCBA’s experience, availability of supervision in the area, type of curriculum used, whether supervision is one-on-one or in a group setting, and how often supervision needs to occur.
  • Depending on where one lives and the amount of experience, an RBT can expect to make $24,000 to $50,000 per year (assuming forty hours of work per week, fifty weeks per year).

BCBA Supervision Requirements

The BCBA requirements to qualify for the exam are stringent and require both supervisees and supervisors to ensure that all components are met or obtained during the course of the supervision experience.
Based on the 5th Edition Task List, BCBA Fieldwork requirements mandate a minimum of 60% indirect (or unrestricted) activities. These include but are not limited to conducting observations and data collection, providing staff training, and conducting assessments.
Other requirements include accruing at least 20 BCBA Supervision Hours per calendar month, ensuring that the BACB Monthly Supervision Form is completed in a timely manner, and attending a minimum number of contacts (meetings) with the supervisor.

However, for those who are not interested in obtaining a graduate degree, the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) offers a bachelor’s level certification (Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst – BCaBA).

There are several different BCBA supervision curriculums currently available; however, they are not all created equal. The curriculum used for supervision with me (first or third person here?) has specifically been selected based on application to both the 4th and 5th Edition BACB Task Lists, ease of application regardless of supervisee experience, and adaptability across multiple settings.

Additionally, the curriculum is designed to maximize unrestricted activities which is now expected to account for at least 60% of all independent fieldwork hours (ex. conducting a functional behavior assessment or evaluating appropriateness of treatment procedures).

Common BCBA supervision hours/activities include conducting assessments, writing behavior intervention plans, developing strategies for teaching new skills, or providing training to staff and caregivers.
