What is ABA?

Applied Behavior Analysis (commonly referred to as ABA) “provides a complete description of the principles and procedures needed to systematically change socially significant behavior and to understand the reasons for that change” (Cooper, Heron, and Heward, 2020). That’s a fancy way to describe the science used to increase or decrease behaviors. While ABA is most often used to increase skill acquisition and decrease undesired behaviors in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), this is not the only application of the science. Applied Behavior Analysis can also be used to increase academic performance, increase athletic performance, and decrease the severity of symptoms of mental health disorders. While insurance mandates have pigeon-holed ABA into the Autism corner, Aligned Behavior Consulting hopes to bridge the knowledge gap and bring this unique approach to other industries.
